Porting a wedge

*zra76 said: This will lower the ballflight, correct. I am thinking of either 1 port on the inside or 3, 1 outside and 2 inside to promote a low fade. Anyone see a difference in ballflight from a ported wedge?

d*mon said: Yes, it will lower your ballflight. Why dont you just put an X stiff shaft in it?

*zra76 said: Quote: Originally Posted by demon Yes, it will lower your ballflight. Why dont you just put an X stiff shaft in it? Drilling is easier. http://www.shottalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif I'll probably end up doing both.

Lyl*G said: Drilling will also make it way to light

*zra76 said: There is no winning.

gwl*e7 said: Why don't you just buy about 50 or 60 wedges until you find one you like?:D

S*ndpiper3 said: May i ask wat exactly is porting?

*zra76 said: There you are. http://www.shottalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif Yeah, I'll have to look into a few different shafts. That wedge flies so much higher than my old 54* did. I might just go back to MP-T's.

w*rbirdlover said: "Porting" a wedge? Sounds like something you'd do to a racecar engine :D

R*ckford35 said: Send me that head. I'll trade you straight up for a Cleveland Launcher Ti 3 wood. But try the shaft thing first. Get an S300 and tip it. Wait, that head is probably tapered. Without drilling, you gotta find a high bend point steel shaft. PX or Black Gold. .355 taper tip. R35

*zra76 said: Is it a 13* 3W? I do have a bid in on a CG-10 56*... Hmmm.... maybe I could get to wear that Cleveland hat this year after all... http://www.shottalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

R*ckford35 said: Yep... R35

*zra76 said: Hmmm... I could win that 56* CG-10, which has a 6.5 spinner, then play my old 50*, which I just put a "custom grind" on. I actually hit it off the road a dozen times then ground down the area that hit most, it looks like total $hit. :) Let me think about it... I removed the white paint from the Mizuno logo on the back but I suppose you would have done so anyway, it was gaudy.

R*ckford35 said: No worries. I don't have a headcover, but I'm sure that's not a huge worry for you. I'm not gonna use this, so it's yours if you want it. R35

Y*ungun5 said: rock most of your posts say you play a draw or hit it straight etc. but the wear patterns on both that 13* cleveland, and your HiBore are characteristic of a fade swing path.....

R*ckford35 said: I've never hit that Cleveland, Gun. I bought it used.:D But good eye. R35

b*mes said: Rock, is that Eddie's dad's 3 wood? Didn't work out eh.

Lyl*G said: Porting is drilling holes into the muscle portion of the wedge. se attached pic of a pre ported wedge.http://www.myostrichgolf.com/clubmak...oducts_id=1258 The problem in doing this on your own is the sheer amount of weight you will lose. I custom grind wedges, and this process alone usually results in a 3-5 swing weight point loss, that needs to be corrected. Three ports like the ones in the pic can lower the swing weight by 8-12 points. Very unfixable with lead tape or tungston powder.

nm250*ff said: When a wedge is ported and the trajectory is lower, do you gain more spin? Do you gain distance or do you loose distance because of the lower ball flight? I have a CG 10 that feels a bit heavy, but I do not know how porting will affect the performance. Any help would help.

It's unfortunate that I didn't get to hit that thing. At 13*, I bet it hits the ball nice. Oh well, the life a club ho is a rocky one. :D R35 PS...Ed got anything else he's parting with? ;)

I just hit this thing higher than a telephone pole and can't get it much lower. Spin is not a concern, I'd rather not have a lot of spin. In my experience landing a low trajectory shot 10ft. in front of the stick is a lot more reliable than landing a high trajectory shot 10ft. past the stick and spinning it back. Every shot I've ever spun back has had 1 thing in common... a longer putt. http://www.shottalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

I am having a TT DG X100 in my 60* wedge today just to see if it helps any. If it does then I am going to try one of my spare MP-33 6 irons with either a black gold X or a DG X100.

*zra76 said: That's why I don't even bother with a 60. A 3/4 shot would go about 25yds. and 125yds. high. I can flop my 52 over a 12ft. tree in my dad's backyard, a 60 would warrant a trip to the dentist. Let me know how the reshaft effects it. For now I will try the tape here... I also may have the 56-10 coming...Attachment 2846

R*ckford35 said: Sweet. I hate that paintfill, acetone that bizatch right now! :D R35

*zra76 said: That Mizuno used to be white. Now that was ugly... I'm going to strip the whole thing though. I need to buy some more lead tape. I went through 10 3g strips pretty quick.

Lyl*G said: That tape wont do squat. Wedges are meant to go high. Vary your angle of attack and ball position to hit lower. 5 grams of lead wont do anything other than soften the shaft about a 1/4 flex which should help you hit it a little higher..

*zra76 said: Damn you Lyle... I bet I'd have hit it lower just by beleiving the lead tape was doing something... http://www.shottalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif Now I scour Ebay for a few Project X 6.5 PW shafts and take 2" off the tips. Either that or I'm buying Miura's. Somehow those guys have figured out how to make my 5iron an PW have about a 5foot height difference with the same shafts. How bout if I add 6 grams of tape and put 3-2gram holes into that Mizzy emblem with my 3/4" drill?

Lyl*G said: Its not the club man. I bet Tiger could hit that wedge any height you ask him to.

Oh well, the life a club ho is a rocky one. :D R35 PS...Ed got anything else he's parting with? ;) It was nice, a very solid feel, despite the garbage shaft it came with. I think he only has some old Ping drivers (his dad's), Odyssey putters, possibly some Callaway Fusion irons (his dad's), Hogan Apex irons, and a virtually brand new set of CG4 irons (a gift that he decided not to use), and a Scotty Cameron Luguna pro titanium putter. I will see him in a few weeks, we are getting together to golf in St. George Utah. I'm dying, I still haven't played the Evo in my 905R yet - too cold here.
